Penan women in the dark about rape

KUCHING: Many Penan women in the Baram interior are unaware that rape is a crime, according to the Sarawak Women for Women Society (SWWS).

SWWS president Margaret Bedus yesterday asked: "Without this knowledge that rape is a crime, how can we expect them to report rape?"

She said in a statement that SWWS members recently held a workshop on legal rights for Penan women in the Baram interior. Bedus said there should be better ways of reporting crimes such as rape for people living in the interior.

"How can a woman with little, if any, cash, travel to a police station miles away? We can hardly expect her to ask the logging company to transport her," Bedus said.- + selanjutnya
